Black bees

Sir, — While Mr Rooney (“The Press,” December 2) is quite an authority on shrubs, etc., I feel that his expertise does not extend to bees. His criticism of dark bees is a little unkind. Only yesterday, I removed four frames of beautiful, luscious honey from one of my dark,

bad-tempered hives — quite a find for early in the season. Admittedly, the bees chased me off the premises, but I am not holding that against them. Any insect that works so hard for my gratification is entitled to an occasional tantrum. — Yours, etc., T. H. GOODARD, Blenheim. December 4, 1978.
