Govt backing club for ageing
The Methodist Central Mission’s planned residential club for the ageing will be subsidised by the Government up to $BOO,OOO.
Working ' drawings for the club are under way. It will provide 50 elderly people with “sheltered housing” on a semi-inde-pendent basis. The club’s aim will be to provide facilities for independent living, within a community framework, for those capable of it. The superintendent of the mission (the Rev. W. E. Falkingham) said that the club, which would be in Harewood Road, would consist of 50 units, each with a bathroom, kitchen, and a bedsitter.
As the housing would be part of a community, close to the Fairhaven Hospital and residential home, a large hall would also be built, Mr Falkingham said.
The club would cater for as many as 100 persons so that residents could invite their friends for games, socialising and parties, he said.
Building will probably start about the middle of next year.
The club is the first significant sheltered-hous-ing project approved by the Government, and is regarded as a pilot scheme by the Health Department.
