Canon’s labour league
Canon Bob Lowe, the vicar of Fendalton, has received a telegram from the mutton slaughtermen at the Ocean Beach freezing works, near Bluff, in response to last Sunday’s “Open Pulpit” television programme. Canon Lowe’s guest on the programme was Mr “Blue” Kennedy, secretary of the Meat Workers’ Union. “We, the mutton slaugh-
termen. wish to express our deep concern at your paucity in salary," the telegram says. "We suggest you take immediate steps to apply for a substantial increase in pay. We offer our full support should you decide to take ecclesiastical action.” To which Canon Lowe has sent a reply: “Dear brothers, your promised assistance moves me deeply. Am all cut up.”
