Playground at mall?
The developers of the G.U.S. shopping mall in Merivale think it may be possible to include a children’s playground in the complex, the Merivale Precinct Society has been told. The chief planning officer of the Christchurch City Council (Mr W. T. Williams) said that this was one of three recent innovations in the scheme. It was something that a working party of the society could take up with the developers if they wished. Another innovation after discussions between the developers and the council’s officers was that the “fairly big” car-park
might be landscaped to a high standard. Mr Williams said that there had also been two further reductions in the floor space of the mall, which was now between 10,000 sq ft and 15,000 sq ft. Mr Williams said that Merivale was short Of public open spaces but there was a “small ray of hope” in that the new local government act required developers of flats to make reserves contributions. Money from this source could be used to buy small pockets of land, there was also the possi» bility of blocking off some streets to create “little intimate areas.”
