Refuse site remains secret

1 The controversial northern! refuse transfer station site llwill remain an “in-committee”l I secret until land-purchase 'negotiations are complete. II The Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee dis-, ' cussed the Dyers Road and Haydens Road sites at a. meeting yesterday, but the ' exact site of the station, once proposed for the Styx Mill! Road region, was not dis-; closed. The committee will not! meet again publicly until February. The new member of Parliament for Papanui (Mr M. K. j Moore) said that he had been I told no immediate decision ’would be made on the site.

Ruru Road which is needed ■for access. Plans for the western station, in Parkhouse Road, off Haydens Road, are well under way, and sketch plans were approved. The site has a 135 m by 40m building. Working drawings! will be prepared subject to I purchase. A letter will be sent to the ! The committee agreed that: local authorities should set! and make annual reviews of; refuse-dump charges to the ; public. These might be 50c !for cars and station-waggons,

;$1 for trailers, and $2 per tonne for commercial 1 vehicles from next April. Under an original “userpays” scheme, the cost per car might rise to $1 by 1981. $2.50 per trailer, and $lO per! i tonne for commercial I vehicles, including local ! authorities. ■ The composting of refuse was discussed at length, and it was agreed that such work would have to be done at the landfall site — not at the transfer stations — and then only after refuse had been pre-treated by shredding. Such activities will probably not start until about two or three years after the land-; fill site is in use.
