Factory building approved
i An upholstery factory in I 'brick buildings at the corner of Barbadoes Street and; [Chester Street has been api proved by the Christchurch City Council. Mr R. C. Muschamp’s proposal to shift his factory to the Residential 5 zone required a specified departure. The site has been used for industrial activities since the 19205. Although the proposal drew 11 objections from nearby residents, a townplanning hearing panel said) it was a case of weighing the ultimate goal of housing on the site against the desire to use good existing industrial buildings. . The site will stay in a residential zone, “and the residents in the vicinity would be protected against nuisance by the upgrading of the site, and conditions imposed on the applicant,” the panel said. No new buildings will be allowed on the corner site. Vehicles will have access Ito the factory only from (Chester Street, and an old! loading bay in Barbadoes Street will be removed. Off-street parking for 14 vehicles will be provided, along with landscaping. No wood-working machinery will be allowed on the site.
