New two-year-old race at Trentham

PA Wellington A new $15,000 two-year-old race has been carded for the Wellington Racing Club’s cup meeting at Trentham in January. The Dalgety Centennial Stakes will be run at set weights over 1200 m on Wellington Anniversary Day, January 22, which is also Wellington Derby Day. The race is sponsored by Dalgety New Zealand, Ltd. “Having just completed ! our one hundred and twentieth year of trading in New Zealand, we felt that offering to sponsor this new race for the next three years

[would be appropriate recognition of the Wellington Racing Club’s completion of its first century, which will be celebrated in March 1979,” said Dalgety’s Managing Director, Mr D. C. MacDougal, yesterday. The sponsorship also marked the firm’s entry into the thoroughbred bloodstock industry earlier this year. “We feel it is in the industry’s interest generally to encourage a race for young I horses at a major metropolitan meeting at a time when overseas buyers are in New Zealand for the National Yearling Sales,” Mr MacDougal said.
