Hockey losses for N.Z.

NZPA • Lahore New Zealand’s hockey stocks took a further dive yesterday when it was beaten, 3-1, by Great Britain. The loss, following Saturday’s 6-2 drubbing by Pakistan, has virtually ended any hopes New Zealand had of filling a top position in the Five Nations tournament. “Again we had the scoring chances but did not take them — we just threw away | goals,” said the New Zea« land coach (Mr Brian Maunsell). Neither team looked particularly dangerous in yesterday’s match and it was only the way Great Britain took its chances and the goal-keeping of lan Taylor which made the difference.

Great Britain led, 3-0 at half-time with two goals by the centre forward, Terry Gregg, and one from Bab Catrail. The New Zealand shortcorner hitting in the second half was poor. From seven shots New Zealand’s Tony Ineson drilled the ball directly at Taylor four times to provide relatively easy saves. The Montreal gold medallists’ lone goal came from a penalty stroke by Ramesh Patel 15min into the second half. New Zealand’s next match is against Spain on Wednes? day and then it meets its Montreal opponents, Australia, in the final match on Friday. Yesterday Australia beat Spain, 4-2.
