Cannabis case hearing further adjourned
A part-time student who faces four charges laid under the Misuse of Drugs Act was further remanded to November 20 for the taking of (depositions by Mr F. G. Paterson, S.M., when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The taking of depositions against Jonathon Hugh Waddy, aged 21, were to have been heard yesterday, but Sergeant M. South said it was impossible to go ahead.
Waddy is charged with cultivating cannabis, pos- ! sessing cannabis, having i cannabis in his. possession I for the purpose of supply, )and having the drug in his I possession for the purpose of sale.
The alleged offences were committed on September 14. Bail of $l5OO with a similar surety was allowed by the Magistrate. THEFT CHARGES Bail of $l5OO was set
when a man aged 26 appeared on three charges of theft as a servant.
Rex William Blenkinsop, unemployed, was remanded without plea to November 20 on charges of stealing a turntable, valued at $l4l, an amplifier, valued at $249, and a set of lights, valued at $153 — all the property of his employer, Teltherm Industries, Ltd. The alleged offences occurred between July and October this year. He was remanded to November 20. (Before Mr P. J. McAloon, S.M.) COMMUNITY WORK One hundred hours of community work and 12 months probation were imposed on Kathleen Frances Poharama, aged 31, when she appeared for sentence on two charges of theft. Last week Poharama pleaded guilty to stealing items totalling $129 from
(John Burns and Company, | Ltd, and other items worth $4.79, the property of Mag|net Discount Centre. Both (offences occurring on October 20. The Magistrate said it was not a simple case of shoplifting; neither were they spur-of-the-moment lapses. “You told the police that you and your husband could not afford to pay for the articles because you had no money. Yet the goods — including a jewellery box, a metric wrench, a trinket container, a carving set, paint brushes, a chisel — are not of the sort people take because they’ lack i money unless they ’planned) to sell them again and so, become further involved in) criminal activity,” he said. ) Poharama was warned by) the Magistrate that any further appearance in court for offences involving dishonesty could result in the court’s having to consider a! prison sentence.
