Socialist honour
PA Wellington The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) is the first New Zealander to be elected vice-president of Socialist International, said the New Zealand Labour Party yesterday. The election took place at a recent congress of the organisation in Vancouver, Canada. The president is the former West German Chancellor, Mr Willy Brandt, and other vice-presidents include the British Prime Minister, Mr James Callaghan, and the chancellor of the Federal Republic of
Germany, Mr Helmut ; Schmidt. Mr Rowling was elected president of the Asia-Pa- j cific region of the organ- | isation last year. He said yesterday that the election was an honour for the New Zealand labour movement and underlined the association with Social Democrat parties throughout the world. Mr Rowling said he believed his election would give a New Zealand labour government additional influence with countries where Social Democrat governments were in j power.
