‘Fun Run’ for women
i Some of Canterbury’s best (known sportswcmen will • lead the way in a Y.W.C.A. I fun run for women in Hagiey I Park on December 3. ! The starter will be a male — the New Zealand representative walker, Graham Seater — but the rest of the “big names” associated with the run will be women. They include Vicki McGregor and Lesley Shankland (cricket), Anne McKenna (cricket and hockey), Frances Grainger and Christine Pietzner (netball), Mary Fastier (volleyball), Raelene Hollier (gymnastics), Vicky Sherriff (hockey), Jackie I Cook ( basketball), and Judy Davidson (golf). One of New Zealand’s top athletes, Mrs Valerie Young, would welcome the runners « 1 1 I
at the Armagh Street en-i trance to Hagiey Park at ,10! a.m. and give a “small chat”! about fitness and running, as well as going on the run,! said the organiser, Ms Rae-! wyn Cook, programme • director of the YWCA.
She said the growth in interest in the women’s running club at the YWCA had encouraged it to try the idea of a run just for women. There would be two distances; Bkm for the fit and 3.6 km for the not so fit. A free creche would be availlable also.
“None of the sportswomen taking part are competitive runners, and so we hope no one will be put off because of their presence,” she said. “We just hope that it will encourage other women to come along.”
