Nostalgia at cycling
By RAY CAIRN’S Not only the inaugural trackcycling meeting of the season at English Park gave last evening's meeting a nostalgic flavour. It was marked, too. by a return to the track after an absence of four years of Don Swanston and the 'first racing nf a brief sojourn in Christchurch by Gary Sword. Their reappearances were not distinguished b\ startling performances—and in Sword’s easel he is hack in Christchurch only for his brother's wedding—but I they enhanced otherwise scanty fields. Al) the same. Sword finished with typical dash in winning the 240 Gm and in gaining second place behind Kim Reid in the concluding 4800 m. Mick Litolff was not nearly as dominant as in the first meeting at Denton Park, making his main effort in the 4800 m but running out of room and speed. He did not take part in the brief sprint series in which Reid ■ first disposed of Sword and then itook a virtual photo-finish result from Murray Steele. I The next was
that in which Kelvin Steele beat Lin Sword. Not a great deal went right i for Craig Adair after his suc- - cesses on Sunday. He pulled a . foot out in his first race, tailed i io make the start of the next. ■ but made amends with his i powerful sprinting in the points race and a strong finish in the • Italian pursuit. The best-performed, however, were David Ross-Smith, sprinting sharply, and Paul Cattermole. J making full use of his handicap* ■ Results: — AMATEUR A grade 500 m sprints: K. W. Reid beat G. P.
