Rangiora shops reject extension
i Few shops in Rangiora I seem likely to open their doors on Saturdays and Sundays. ■ Week-end trading was opposed at a public meeting in [Rangiora this week. The [meeting was called by the [Rangiora Businessmen’s [ Association. Its president [(Mr E. R. Fox) said that [about 12 businessmen [attended, but no member of The public. Mr Fox said the meeting had been called as a result [of an application by a Ra[ngiora craft business, Noah’s 'Ark, to trade on Sundays [from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Also, [there had been considerable ■ talk recently about extended shopping hours, trading on Saturdays, and of many [goods being taken off the 'exempted-selling list. The meeting had felt that
i businesses in Rangiora were [ - serving the public well, said • Mr Fox. “We could see no [ point in making changes for [ - the sake of change.” 1 Mr N. J. Walker said ini ' his application to extend the [ 1 hours of Noah's Ark, that! ! since opening in September [ it had become apparant that there was a need for trading; 1 on Sundays. ‘ “Nowhere in our North; Canterbury area is there a [ ’ craft shop such as mine, [ L open on a Sunday, where [ [ visiting people can view and; 5 purchase local crafts,” said 5 Mr Walker. ; “It is also very important i to our own local cottage in- , dustries as an outlet for , their work,” he said. ; Mr Walker’s application will be heard in Christt church on November 20.
