RAY CAIRNS
I Steve Cox (Waipa) is the i unlucky man in the selection of the five-man New Zea- | land road-cycling team to icontest the Red Zinger Tour i in Colorado next year, I probably in July. ; The top-placed Common- | wealth rider in this year's ) tour, contested by the Ed--1 monton Commonwealth : Games team. Cox surj prisingly is only first reserve j for the squad. | The selectors (G. W. Shar- ; rock, J. W. Broome, and K. iHastie named Blair Stock- , well, Vem Hanaray, Garry ,Bell. Jack Swart, and Paul j Jesson as their team. Of the experienced Stockwell and Hanaray there i could be no question, even if an unwell Hanaray was by no means at his best for the Dulux tour which finished
■ on Saturday. Swart and Jes-! Ison also had to be chosen,' Iso dominant were they in the! same tour. i But Bell, even if he is the Commonwealth Games: bronze-medal winner, was lone of the most negative of) [all on that tour and even if| 'he finished ahead of Cox he! did not show the determi-i nation of Cox. The second reserve is! Kevin Blackwell, with Jim I [Ryder surely next in line because it appears that Black-] [well is not interested in thei • tour. The selectors have also' ichosen their “road cyclist ot the year’’: Swan, winner o! the national title, the Dulux tour, and the Family Tavern! tour all within two months! or so of returning from the Commonwealth Games and world championships as a specialist track rider.
