Charlie Cross again showed form andv<us unbeaten on 44 when Sum-* ner declared at 237 for four. ’ Terry Cock burn toiled hard for Belfast for his two wickets for' 66 mns while Peter Steere. picked up tuo cheap wickets at* the end Belfast was in trouble at' stumps. Allan Hounseil opened, a strong Sumner bowling attack' which had taken five wickets* for 93 at the close Koger Tavlor impressing with a steady! 65. Waltham staged a rear-guard: action when it lost quick wic - kets after being put into bat by Merivale-Papauui Four batsmen i were out tor only 34 runs but; tenacity and a application from! Steve Holden 94 . Mike Edding-i ton *'3s\ and Gary Baxter (22)1 took Waltham through to the 1 respectable total of 231. Bowling for Merivale-Papanui, I Paul Hammant took five for 45 and Allan Murray managed four? for 61 Both bowlers deserved! their figures as fielding lapses! cost them on occasions. j At stumps Merivale-Papanui I rad put on 51 runs for the loss l of two batsmen. Hornby seemed to be heading for a sizeable score after it had been put into bat by Wool fcton W.M.C Bob Kerr again baited attractively to score 67 before he was winkled out bv Norm. Sloan Robeit Wilson batted well ior his 26, as did Ron 1 Jounson 36 but the others! could manage onh 50 runs be-’ tween them as Hornbv slumped, to be ail out for 179. Sloan bowled well and was; rewarded for his efforts with!. Bix for 49. while Kutoli leremia* finished with three for 48. I In reply, Woolston W.M.C. had lost eight wickets for 102 at •tumps. Gary Smitheram <2O and Ken laylor <27i were the top scorers for Wooiston, while for Hornby Gary Clifford took three! wickets. Obviously upset bv the long, grassy outfield, the young Hoon ’ Hay W.M.C . team failed to fire •nd was all out for a meagre ; 40 in its match with Upper Riccarton. Paul McMillan had an '
impressive five for eight and Terry Caldwell bowled well for his three wickets for nine. The bowlers received valuable assistance from the wicket keeper, Steve Donaldson, who rook six catches behind the stumps. Upper Riccarton was in a strong position at stumps.
