Duets feature at concert
By C. FOSTER BROWNE It was “duo day” at the Wednesday at One concert in the Arts Centre and from the artists on the bill it followed that niceties of balance, blended tone, and apposite phrasing would be of high standard. So it was with Bach’s Two Duets for Violin and Viola, played by Ruth Pearl and Jocelyn Perry, spreading benign calm. In the second movement there was adventurous and exciting canonic development, stylishly brought to life.
Keith Spragg and Liam Gill played Duo No. 1 for Clarinet and Bassoon by Beethoven, a well sounding combination of instruments. The whole work, in three movements, had joyous and embracing sounds, beautifully balanced. Mozart’s Duo No. 2 for Violin and Viola was played by Ruth Pearl and Jocelyn Perry with the elegance of style his music demands. The graceful melodies were played with artistic realisation of formal construction, and the variations in the last section had poise and varied rhythmic changes, delightful in their polished effect.
