The Pope and politics
Sir, — I recommend “prolife” enthusiasts to read an article in “Time,” September 11, 1978, about a prosperous South American country which obviously does not practise birth control. What advice would smug New Zealanders offer Brazilian parents, where there are 16 million deprived, unwanted children? In Rio de Janreio alone, more than 100 babies under three years of age are abandoned each month to join corrupt, pitiful groups of minors who live in pipes; rat-infested cellars: and in miserable heaps on beaches and street corners. “Thousands of parents are forced to cast their offspring out like rubbish.” However, well-meaning the Pope’s edicts may be, he and his Church must take some responsibility for such unplanned, futile growth. — Yours, etc., CHRISTINA K. GUY. October 30, 1978.
