The economy
Sir, — H. Ellis (November 2) states that there is a lot more to life than survival and the obvious question is, what? In moralising that money is not necessarily a prerequisite to happiness this correspondent is not stating anything original. AU employed and unemployed wage-earners normally ask of life is sufficient for the permanent security of themselves and their families. They all need shelter; therefore mortgage is a necessary evil. Most modern people see personal transport as a norm. Clothing is far from cheao these davs, and that of school-age children can be more expensive than that of their parents. If H. Ellis sees so much going for the simplistic life of our forefathers let him take off and indulge to his heart’s content. Meanwhile, let all those who feel their security and even survival threatened under the present regime, ignore the platitudes of such people as H. Ellis. — Yours, ARTHUR MAY. November 2, 1978.
