Revered figure

Annual reports are documents which are not usually calculated to raise a chuckle. However, a tongue in cheek reference to a famous player in the annual report of the Linwood Rugby Club has caused no little mirth among the 30 or so members who received “special” copies. The item concerns the 1978 recipient of the T. Latham Trophy — “for the most outstanding senior player over 35 years.” The winner, announced with due solemnity, was Fergie McCormick. He is ths only senior player over that age.

Ivor Endicott-Davies (above) leaves for Japan today as the only South Island representative in a New Zealand team to compete in a tournament to mark the centennial of judo. Davies, a senior coach of the Christchurch International Club, will fight in the under 95kg and open

events of the Kano Centennial invitation judo tournament. The six-strong team, coached by Rick Littlewood, of Auckland, will fight on November 27 and then attend an invitation tournament at the Hawaiian State University. Before the contests, Davies will train at his old Japanese clubs, the

Dor Shi Sha University and the Kyoto Riot Squad. The Kano tournament will not be the first Japanese competition for Davies. In 1973 he fought in the All West Japan competitions. So far, the Canterbury area has raised $B5O towards his travelling expenses.
