Priority for works waste
An end to Belfast freezing works pollution of the South Branch of the Waimakariri River was defined as a top
priority of the North Canterbury Catchment Board, at its annual meeting yesterday. The board also aims actively to try to prevent irresponsible discharge of noxious wastes by industry and agriculture.
“Community responsibility for disposal of waste must be faced smartly,” said the
board’s chairman (Dr R. W. Holmes). “It is disturbing that we have reached the late 1970 s without making more formal and adequate provision for waste disposal.” The board ratified a bore by-law yesterday to give it a better picture of pollution of underground water by ' noxious wastes.
Improvement of the Halswell River would also be a board priority. “The river is manifestly unable to deal with its present water load,” Dr Holmes said. Dr R. W. Holmes has been re-elected chairman of the board, and Mr M. J. Dixon,! vice-president.
