| This cheque for $20,000 measuring 76cm by 33cm, j was presented to the Haiberg Trust at the annual . Sportsman of the Year dinner in Christchurch by Mr Frank Pinfold, of Te : Awamatu, president of the : Eagles Golfing Society of I New Zealand. The Eagles Society, which consists of golfers who have contributed to the game as players or administrators, was founded in Auckland in 1056. This led to the formation

of the Neu' Zealand society in 1964. In 1968, the great Olympic sprinter, Jesse Owens, came to New Zealand to assist Murray Haiberg in a fundraising project for crippled children. Owens was a keen golfer, and it was then suggested that the Eagles Society could assist the Haiberg Trust. In the last three years the society has raisett $45,000 for crippled children, bringing the total in nine years to more than

$lOO,OOO. Hie $20,000 cheque illustrated came from this year’s effort. The Eagles also raised money for coaching promising young golfers and learners, and assist small and remote clubs, and host overseas groups interested in golf and other sports. National coverage by the Eagles will be completed this week-end when the Bu 11 e r-Westland society will be formed, and officers elected.
