Sportsmanship at Cardiff
Sir, — Early on Sunday morning many thousands of us saw a very fine game of rugby but I wonder how many of us realised that we saw something else, too — that we were seeing a revival of old-time sportsmanship as we used to know it. Throughout the game, save for one understandable moment, when it seemed that a
free kick awarded to New Zealand was going to occupy most of the first half, we were applauded as if we were their own by that grand Welsh crowd. It was something to bring a lump to your throat, particularly in these days when victory alone. no matter how achieved seems to mean everything. But here we saw Cardiff, a great Welsh team to whom victory would have meant much, stepping aside to applaud the victorious All Blacks from the field. And then we saw our own team accord them the same honour. — Yours, etc., J. NEE. October 23, 1978.
