Maori weaver wins B.N.Z. award

An 86-year-old traditional Maori weaver took one of the awards at the cocintry’s premier weaving contest announced recently. Mrs Rangi Hetet, of Te kuiti, won $lOOO for her Maori cloak entered in the traditional section of he Bank of New Zealand weaving award run by Lower Hutt’s Dowse Gallery Mrs Hetet has contributed to many books on traditional weaving and is an acknowledged expert in the making of the Maori cloak or “korowai.” She contributed to the New Zealand Craft Exhibition which went to Europe. Mrs Hetet has also passed on the art of weaving to her daughter. Her work, which took more than six months to complete, was made up of flax, fibres, mud, bark and pheasants’ feathers.
