New party to oppose Smith
NZPA-Reuter Salisbury A new multi-racial party headed by a former colleague of the Prime Minister (Mr lan Smith) and opposing his transitional Government has been formed in Rhodesia, the “Sunday Mail” newspaper has reported in Salisbury. It said the party, the National Alliance, was led by Dr Colin Barlow, formerly a prominent member Of Mr Smith’s Rhodesian Front Party. It also included the Zimbabwe People's Party, representing the Shona tribe, and the United Peoples Association, from the Ndebete tribe. The new party said in a statement that it supported a federal system of government based on ethnic lines under which the three main communities — whites, Shona, and Ndebele —■ would largely run their own affairs with equal representation in a co-ordinating Council of State.
