FLOWERS THAT BLOOM IN THE SPRING

A Christchurch wife who loves her garden had given up trying to fire her husband’s enthusiasm for landscaping. Indeed, he was so stubborn he would do anything to avoid having to accompany her to the nursery to buy plants. “Here is an open cheque.” he said trustingly, "and there are the keys to the car, and you know where the garage is. Now, please leave me to watch the football.” The wife decided to teach him a lesson by lavish spending on anything to add a touch of class to her garden, including a $3OO glasshouse. It cured her spouse enough that he made certain he was standing right behind her from then on as she chose plants and paid at the counter. After that his interest waned. Until, one day, they visited a distant nursery renowned for its polyanthus. A week later the anti-garden

husband watched the hand of time move up to 8.45 a.m., and surprised his wife by saying “Hadn’t we better get along to the nursery now?” “If you mean the one just down the road they won’t be open yet, and besides, it takes only a minute to get there,” she answered vaguely. “No, no, I mean the polyanthus specialists, that’s a great place and it takes all of a quarter of an hour to get there,” he said eagerly. He went on to explain why this was his choice in nurseries, and off they went. The trips continued for weeks and remained a mystery to the wife. Then she noticed he changed down a couple of gears as they approached the nursery. There was a bathroom window which faced the road and there silhouetted against the ever so slightly misty pane, was a shapely lady — 9 a.m. was evidently shower time!
