Matrimonial Property Act
Sir, — M. Harkerss (October 13) misinterprets the contents of my previous letters. I have never said that “only men are bludgers.” I said, “It is time for these maintenance dodgers to wake up to their responsibilities.” Some men pay maintenance as legally ordered, but many do not. I believe that in most cases women are granted custody of children because the male does not want to assume the responsibility of child care. How many men try to gain custody of the children? Let me remind people that divorce laws are written by legislators dominated by males, the lawyers who handle divorces are mostly males, as are the judges who make the decisions. The male is still in control of the mechanism of change. He should realise that he is equal to the female as far as our children are concerned, and care enough about them to do something about it. — Yours, etc., PAULINE L. MARKS. October 13, 1978.
