District’s centre
People may go to shopping malls primarily to shop, but there is another trend in the development of such malls which are fast giving them a character as community centres at which people from the surrounding districts can do very much more than just shop. The Hornby Mall is not just a pleasant place to shop. Its large, undercover public areas are suitable for displays, promotions and even gatherings. Public seating and wide walkways make the mall a pleasant place to idle away time with other people around, the same function that village
squares performed years, even centuries, ago. The other feature of new malls like the Hornby Mall which makes them village centres rather than just shopping places is the increasingly wide range of services besides retail shops which are house in them. It has become less than ever necessary for Hornby residents to think of themselves as living on the outskirts of Christchurch, now that the nc .' part of the mall houses a solicitor’s office, an office of the Public Trust, a dental technician and, the organisation hopes, soon a doctor’s offices.
