Second stage adds new supermarket, shops and offices to Hornby Mall
Last year the large illuminated “H” on the corner of Carmen Road and the Main South Road in Hornby became familiar both to passersby and shoppers as the hallmark of one of Christchurch’s most attractive and convenient shopping centres—the Hornby Mall. This week sees the opening of the second stage of
the development of the mall, just one year after the first stage was opened. This first stage of the development had an area of 4712 square metres (50,700 sq. ft). It was notable among developments of a similar nature in and around Christchurch for its relatively high architectural standards, clever use being made of repeated pitched roofs to give individuality to each shop
and to give the large structure an intimate rather than dominating scale. The second stage of the development of the Hornby Mall, which has been brought to a successful conclusion with its opening this week, has added a new Super Value supermarket, five more smaller retail shops and a number of professional offices. The development adds 3528 square metres (38,000
sq. ft) to the Hornby Mall, bringing the mall’s total area to 8240 square metres (88,700 sq. ft). The mall now boasts 23 separate shops, plus other customer services including an office of the public trust, banks and a barrister and solicitor’s office. As with the first stage of the development, high standards of design have been adhered to. Extensive use has been made of ter-
, razo flooring and stained 1 hardwood joinery, the I extra expense being justi- ; fled on the grounds .of r greater appeal and greater s durability. s The mall incorporates a large public area for displays, promotions and e gatherings, with a huge i pyramidal skylight provide ing natural lighting. The e entire mall is heated and ventilated and toilet facili-
ties have been provided for public use. Ramps provide access for paraplegics and others confined to wheelchairs. The exterior of the new parts of the mall have been constructed of pre-cast tilt slabs, each weighing 15 tons. Three cranes had to be used simultaneously to hoist them into place. They are finished on the outside in stone aggregate.
