Army wives lonely

PA Wellington Long absence of husbands is an important factor in family discord at Waiouru Military Camp, according to a commission of inquiry. The report of Mr J. H. Macky, a retired Commissioner of Works, has been

tabled in Parliament. Several submissions cited the long absence of husbands as a big cause of family discord, said Mr Macky. To leave a wife alone in Waiouru with a

young family would put a strain on any marriage, and would be to the detriment of the children “In no other community, and in no other occupation, would this occur to the extent that it does in the Army,” the report said. •

"Soldiers are sent off for courses, both in New Zealand and overseas, for extended periods. For a course lasting less than 11 months, the soldier goes unaccompanied.”
