Fashions impress

From LEONE STEWART

“More interesting than some of the collections in Paris,” was the comment from Jean Luc Gronner, overseas judge for this year’s Benson and Hedges fashion design awards, after the judges’ showing in Wellington yesterday. Mr Gronner is personal adviser to the French fashion designer, Andre Courreges. He has come from Paris to judge the awards, which will be televised live from the Wellington Town Hall on Tuesday evening. He had some favourites In mind yesterday, but was giving little away until he had consulted his fellow judge, Mr Adrian Levy, a Wellington men’s wear manufacturer. Mr Gronner was very impressed by the Woolgrowers’ Award for handcrafted wool fashion, which he believes should be promoted as unique New Zealand fashion. “In Europe we are not used to seeing such beautiful fashion in the natural wool,” he said. But he was somewhat disappointed to find no marked difference between the daywear and sports v-ear sections. Meanwhile, the organisers of the awards are nervously awaiting the outcome of negotiations to get $6OOO of Courreges creations from the keeping of Auckland Customs.

The six garments, valued at $lOOO each, are intended to be show pieces in Tuesday evening’s parade.

They were brought to New Zealand by Mr Gronner. Customs officials in Auckland have apparently refused to release them until the necessary importing forms have been filled in, in duplicate, by a Customs agent. The awards organisers are embarrassed. M: Gronner is understanding. "French Customs agents are even worse,” he says.

An entry by Kerry Hughes, aged 18, of Wellington, for the women’s day-wear award in the Benson and Hedges Fashion Design Awards. Miss Hughes is a first-year student in a fashiondesign course. The garment, modelled by Glenda, is a cape-coat, braided in leather and velvet, worn over a circular skirt, with a hooded scarfhat in colours of camel, creams, tans, and browns. The entry is also eligible for the New Zealand Wool Board award.
