Willetts and Andrews out

NZPA Melbourne Melbourne’s two leading jockeys, Brian Andrews and Gary Willetts, have been suspended and will miss some important spring events. The suspensions, imposed by stewards at Sandown on Saturday, were for alleged interference.

Willetts was suspended for four city meetings at the completion of an adjourned inquiry into his riding of Sir Sahib at Moonee Valley on September 16. It was claimed he intentionally pocketed the favourite, Justajoke. during the running of the North Hill Handicap. Andrews was suspended for five city meetings after riding Bold Realm into second place behind Boldpasser in the Chairman’s Handicap at Sandown on Saturday.

Willetts was engaged for Manikato and Andrews for Crepellox in the $77,750 Marlboro Cup (1400 m at Caulfield on Thursday — and both horses are considered top prospects. Willetts has said he may appeal. Andrews will miss the ride on Hyatt in the $100,500 Metropolitan Handicap <2600m) at Randwick on October 2.
