Big Skipper qualifies
NZPA Sydney The Wlngatui-trained stayer. Big Skipper, qualified for the Melbourne Cup and dispelled some doubt over his ability to handle slow conditions when running a close second to the Irish import, Lavache. in the $25,400 S.T.C. Cup (2400 m at RoaehlU on Saturday.
The four-year-old Mellay gelding, well handled by the veteran jockey, Jack Thompson, finished strongly but was beaten by a head, Amicus Amico was a further three-quarters of a lengtli away, third. The trainer, Arthur Didham, will now head for Melbourne with the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups as the main missions for Big Skipper. Saturday’s second placing was worth $5OOO, and the prize money and distance of the race enabled Big Skipper to meet the Melbourne Cup final acceptance qualification. Big Skipper started at 11-to-2. After beginning well on the inside, he dropped back and was forced to travel wide in working his way to fifth on the turn.
Lavache. trained by Bart Cummings, came from further back with a strong finish and just edged the New Zealand stayer out. For Lavache's jockey. Bill Camer, it was a lucky winning ride. Camer was a late engagement for Lavache after Kevin Langby had injured himself in a fall.
