‘Golden egg’ from Eagles
The Murray Halberg Crippled Children’s Trust stands to receive up to $l5OO after the Eagles Golfing Society’s fifth annual sponsored tournament at the Coringa Country Club next month.
The Eagles were founded in New Zealand in 1957, and the Canterbury branch of the society has been going since 1969. The first sponsored tournament to aid the Halberg trust was held at Coringa in 1974, and since then the Canterbury Eagles have raised $4300 for crippled children.
The goal this year is $l5OO, and the 13 other Eagles societies throughout the country are expected to raise as much as $20,000.
As in previous years, the 1978 tournament has been granted the use of the Coringa Country Club course free of charge, and a large number of firms and businesses in Canterbury have donated substantial prizes. Individuals have given prizes as well, and a large number of donations have come from country areas. Mr A. H. Brown, the secretary of the Eagles in
Canterbury, said yesterday the response to the 1978 tournament had been “tremendous.”
“Without the generosity of the sponsors who, year after year, donate their time and valuable prizes for our tournament, we could not continue assisting the Halberg trust as we do,” he said. The tournament is to be held on Wednesday, October 18, and will be played on an 18-hole stableford basis. An entry fee of $6 per player is payable to Mr Tom Hanton, the club professinal at Harewood.
