Mount Hull skifield
Sir, —I should like to commend Mount Hutt on the precautions it took yesterday (September 17) on the departure of cars from the skifield. Because of a minor avalanche risk on the upper section of the road, cars were spaced at 50-yard intervals to drive down, and skifield staff were positioned at strategic points on the road with radios, ready to cope with any minor slips there might have been. After all the problems at Mount Hutt this year, I am full of praise for the precautions taken yesterday. I would, however, like to comment that, as usual, public relations were non-existent as the public waiting to drive down the road were not told the reason for the undue delay. It was only on demanding a reason that we were told of this minor risk.—Yours, etc., (Mrs) P. A. SEAY.

[Mr Yeoman replies: “Your correspondent must have been one of the few who missed the regular announcements over the loudspeaker system. At the car park exit further details were given briefly but, from my inquiries, no-one demanded further reasons. Some asked and were more than satisfied. Those directing traffic have a prime purpose of keeping
vehicles moving under control and the public relations aspect on the day has received praise. Perhaps Mrs Seay may like to telephone me to discuss the matter,”]
