Government spending

Sir, — According to the Minister of Works the Government’s excuse for refusing the broadcasting of some of the “marathon debate” is that “the public of New Zealand were saved a lot of claptrap.” I could not agree more. The Government’s excuses for spending a vast S6O3M over and above its so-called Budget were indeed “a lot of claptrap.” This is no surprise. This Governm e n t ’ s economic incompetence is already manifest, and no amount of Parliamentary claptrap or flashy television advertising will change that before November 25. What is surprising however is the extent of the Government’s panic and desperation in attempting to brush over this important matter. The Labour Opposition, few though they be, have shown, by their spirit and energy, not only their effectiveness in disciplining the Government for its economic foibles, but also the high calibre we can expect cl' the next Labour Government. Roll on polling day. — Yours, etc., D. J. O’ROURKE. September 21, 1978.
