Japanese crewmen to see families

Shipping News

Twenty-one Japanese crewmen aboard the Toei Maru, now berthed at Lyttelton, will soon see their families probably for the only time in eight months. The Toei Maru, a four hold refrigerated vessel of 7354 tons, will spent a week here loading mutton for Japan. She arrived yesterday morning with a cargo of bananas from Ecuador, having called at Auckland on her way. Owned by the Toko Line, under charter to LauritzenPeninsular Reefers, Ltd, a Danish firm, she is scheduled to sail for Bluff and Napier on Wednesday. Headed by Captain O. Mlyame, her crew is of only two months standing, although the vessel has been away from Japan for more than a year. Crew rotation occurs every eight months, and the present crew relieved their predecessors In the United States in July. This trip home will probably be the only time they see Japan before they return for their three months leave next year. The last time the Toei Maru visited Lyttelton was two years ago when she lay idle for more than a fortnight waiting for a drivers’ strike to end. On that occasion a large proportion of her $250,000 cargo was dumped as the bananas became over-ripe. ARRIVALS Toei Maru (11.30 a.m.l, 7354, Auckland, Captain O. Miyame, (Toko Linet.
