S.M. saw beer can hit man

PA Wellington; A Magistrate said that he' had seen a thrown beer can knock out a spectator at the Australia-New’ Zealand rugby test at Athletic Park.

Mr W. M. Willis, S.M., hearing a case against a man accused of throwing the can, said that he was at the park on the day, saw the incident, and had strong feelings about it.

A man, aged 21, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault and was remanded to September 26 for sentence. His name was suppressed. Sergeant F. Wood said that on August 19 the defendant was in the Millard Stand and was drinking from beer cans. He threw a half-full can in the air. It landed on the complainant sitting below him, knocking him unconscious.

The man was taken to hospital, where he had three stitches and was kept overnight for observation. After leaving hospital, the complainant suffered severe headaches, and had since been told by a specialist that his brain had swollen because of the blow. The headaches were expected to recur for several years.
