Re-appointment right bill’s aim
PA Wellingtoni Public servants who re-1 signed to look after pre-! school children would be able to be re-appointed to the Public Service within four years, under a bill introduced into Parliament. The State Services Amendment Bill was a further step to remove discrimination against people who stayed at home to look after children, said the Minister of State Services (Mr Gordon), introducing the bill. The bill provided for the preferential right of re-entry into the Public Service for people who had resigned to look after one or more preschool children, he said.
11 They would be able to be . * re-appiointed within four .i years, or five years in the . case of a woman who had \ been entitled to maternity - leave. I The bill provided equally for men and women, and the ■ State Services Commission i and the Public Service Assoi ciation had recommended the ; changes proposed in the bill. Under it, a person would ! be eligible for reappointment to a position provided the duties and responsibilities were the same, or substantially the same, as those held at the time of the resignation, and the position was in the same department.
