Dam bought at S.I. sale
By I
PAUL MEIN
Koiro Trelay, decisive winner of yesterday’s $lO,OOO Hawke’s Bay Guineas is the product of yet another bargain purchase plucked from the South Island Bloodstock Sale. The three-year-old’s dam, Corrieann, was a $2OOO purchase at the 1973 sale by an American cattle breeder, Mr D. G. Canning. A Kurdistan mare, Corieann is from a half sister to the grand jumper. Golden Defaulter, whose 13 wins included victories in both the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase and Hurdle races. Mr Canning, who has a
penchant for grey horses, sent Corrieann south to the former boom stallion, Mellay, but switched to Trelay after Mellay’s sudden death. The result of that mating, Koiro Trelay yesterday posted his fourth and most important win to date when triumphing in the Guineas, the first South Island sired horse to do so since the My Pal horse, Roi, won in 1964. The grey colt had previously won three races in his first term of racing ini eluding the Otaki Stakes. Koiro Trelay races from the Awapuni stable of Eric I Temperton, the man who ' plucked another bargain from the South Island sales, , the grey mudlark, Charger, i some eight years ago.
