Club stakes a record $l 1/4M
PA Auckland' Stakes paid by the Auckland Racing Club in 1977-781 were more than $1,125,000! — the first time any racing or trotting club has distributed more than SIM in one season. The increase in stakes of $156,715 was made up by $15,000 from sponsors, $36,160 from the stakes subsidy fund and $105,555 from club funds. A balance sheet and revenue statement presented to members at the annual meeting showed a rise in income trom race meetings to $2,371,401 from $2,009,022, but an increase also in race meeting expenditure from $1,151,344 to $1,353,069. The report showed attendance at Ellerslie up last season to 278,693 from 272,892 in 1976-77, although the average was down by nearly 1000. Average course betting rose to $47.43 from $45.76 the previous season. The club paid $64,034 by the way of levy to the Racing Conference as against $60,350 for the 1976-77 season, $2,613,000 in totalisator duty and $17,383 in land tax.
