Revenue from tourism up
Parliamentary reporter
Over the last 10 years, revenue from tourism had increased more than 1000 per cent said the chairman of the Government caucus committee on tourism (Mr R. L. G. Talbot) yesterday, replying to criticism made by the Opposition spokesman on tourism (Mr N. J. Kirk) that the Government had legislated and negotiated against the tourist industry.
Mr Talbot said that assertions that the travel industry had been burdened with a SI4M a year travel tax was another attempt by the Labour Party at making short-term political capital out of New Zealand’s firsttier growth industry, tourism. If Labour became the Government it would introduce an overseas exchange tax which would cost the country up to S4OOM a year, a tax which would have a shattering effect not only on the economy generally but also on tourism, Mr Talbot said.
