N.Z. girls third
New Zealand finished third provisionally in the girls’ section of the Australian national teams table tennis tournament, being held in Melbourne this week.
This was a fine achievement, considering New Zealand was seeded fourth for the tournament. In its final match yesterday, the team was beaten. 6-3, by New South Wales. At the same time, the New Zealand boys’ team just beat Queensland, 5-4. It has two matches remaining today, against Victoria and New South Wales.
The Auckland player. Linda Dyer, ranked third in national junior rankings, has been in impressive form. She beat Mary Cannon, the fifth-seeded Australian junior and V. Sikora, the seventh seed
The provisional placings in the girls’ competition are: Queensland 1, New South Wales 2, New Zealand 3, Victoria 4, South Australia 5. Tasmania 6.
Earlier in the competition. Stuart Armstrong, Canterbury’s only representative, took the ton Australian junior, Nigel Ward, to three games before losing, 21-18. 20-22, 16-21.
