Whitebait catches steady
Greymouth reporter
Whitebaiters in South Westland have been averaging catches of 4kg to skg a day.
A resident of the region said yesterday that the catches” had been fairly steady. Most fisherman predicted a lull later this r nth, but felt that catches would improve again in October and November. Further north, returns are still meagre. On the Grey River, which was calm yesterday, few whitebaiters had anything to show for their labours. Six unattended whitebait nets have been seized by Ministry of Fisheries officers during routine patrols of Canterbury rivers, according to a Ministry spokesman. •t is an offence to leave whitebait nets unattended. People are supposed to stay within ten metres of their nets. A fine of $lOO may be imposed if unattended nets ar: seized.
Leaving nets unattended is a problem that occurs every whitebaitin;, season. Sometimes, people can be working two nets or more at a time which is against the law, said a Ministry spokesman.
“Not all the nets seized were left unattended. One was found in a restricted area which is also against the law,” he said.
