Steer record
' A five-year-old price record for cattle at the Addington Market was broken yesterday when a heavy Murray Grey steer was sold for $551. This eclipsed the previous record of $503, which was held bv the estate of C. S. Donald, for a Friesian. The vendor of the recordpriced steer vesterdav was Andrew Hogg, of Albury. Two other steers of similar breeding, offered on account of other members of the Hogg family, fetched $412 and $420. Regular followers of the cattle market were preparedto estimate the big
beast’s weight only in round figures. On the hoof he weighed well over a tonne; on estimated hook weight, somewhere between 500 kg and 550 kg (11001 b to 12001 b). Retail buyers showed strong interest but the big bullock was finally sold to a private individual. Big steers at Addington frequently attract the interest of private buyers who put their judgment to the test by having them killed on their own account, usually at a freezing company. This is believed to be the destination of the new record-setter. Market - report. Page 14
