Kahawai fishing
Sir, — With regard to the article “Gone Fishing” (“The Press, September 14), Mr Brian Webb, chief executive of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, remarks on the society enforcing. the Regulation (No. 39) which prevents non-licence holders fishing in acclimatised waters for kahawai using ticers, spoons or similar gea. also used for catching acclimatised fish. If Mr Webb was to go one step further and enforce the rule (No. 106) which would prevent salmon fishermen from discarding their unwanted fish upon the riverbanks and the beaches and if they were persuaded to return their unwanted catch back to the water, it would probably leave enough kahawai for the kahawai fishermen and warrant the payment of $l2 for a licence for those persons who dislike the taste of acclimatised fish. — Yours, etc., DAVE McKEY. September 18, 1978.
