Addington Market -

Prime cattle values remained ; much on a par with la&t week s rates - at the Addington -Market I yesterday. However, it was sometimes a fluctuating sale. After showing further improvement in the early stages, j fat lamb values settled back to ithe rates of last week. ' Woolly ewes continued to sell i well in the prime sheep section, I but shorn ewes were easier ! throughout. Store ' hoggets and breeding ewes with lambs at foot continued to meet strong demand; store cattle, however, were gen-1 erally easier. Prime lambs Prime lambs continued to meet a sound inquiry, although the market showed a little more movement than usual. Until the middle stages of the sale, manv lambs were up to a dollar a head stronger, particularlv where quality was good, but from there the trend was easier, and values closed in line with the rates of last week. Prime sheep Ewes made up a large proportion of the yarding of 1410 prime sheep, and they often had a much easier sale. With some farmer interest, woolly ewes held up well, but shorn ewes were a regular $1.50 a head easier. A fairly small selection of young wethers had a firm sale; most of them were shorn. Prime cattle Prime cattle had a fluctuating sale. The yarding rose from 334 last week to 441, at which it was larger than for some weeks. At its best the market was a little stronger, but generally it did not allow a great deal of change on last week's rates. Light-weight eattle, particularly heifers, continued to meet an excellent demand. A feature of the sale was the price of $551 for a heavy steer. This was a record for the yards since the introduction of decimal currency; the previous best price was $503. Good quality tight to medium .steer beef continued to sell at 98c to 108 c a kg, with some sales to 110 c; heifer beef mainly at 95c to 100 c; young cow beef to 70c, manufacturing cow beef at 65c, and overfat steer beef at 36c to 88c a kg. Store cattle Small yearling heifers and steers made up the bulk of a yarding of about 500 store cattle After last week’s special store cattle sale, the market was often . about $lO a head easier, although . some sales were comparable. . Small yearling heifers sold • steadily at $4O to $5O. with odd • sales to more than $6O; small - yearling steers at $7O to $BO. with a few sales of better-grown cattle to $ll5. Few two-year-old cattle were included, but they were eagerlysought. One of the best prices was $l5l for a pen of fairly small hard-conditioned He re fords. Sales of store cattle included;— D. G. and M. J. Gibbons (Hinds), 32 yearling Hereford steers at $67 to $B3. 14 yearling Angus heifers at $49; J. H. Lawrence (Hawarden), 13 yearling Hereford steers at $63 to $79, 11 Hereford heifers at $63. Dairy cattle There were only two quotable sales of dairy cattle. A Friesian heifer with calf at foot fetched $222. and a Friesian cow with her second calf at foot, $230. Vealers Vealers continued to meet a very good sale. The yarding of 105 head was on the small side, but quality was usually much better. Top price was $204 for a young steer, and there were other sales at $lBO or more. Very few fell below $llO. On estimated hook weight much of the veal was selling at 88c to 95e a kg, with top quality lots to $1 a kg. Fat pigs An average yarding of fat pigs had a very firm sale. Medium to heavy baconers, in particular, were $2 to $3 a head stronger. Some overfat pigs were forward, and they sold at a big discount. A small yarding of choppers met brisk Inquiry at values $6 to $8 a head stronger. Values:— Light porkers, $3B to $43. Medium porkers, $43 to $47.30. Heavy porkers and light baconers, $4B to $56. Medium baconers, $57 to $65. Heavy baconers, to $7l. Choppers, $45 to $76. Store pigs In spite of a stronger fat pig market, store pig values did not show the same marked trend. Quality was quite good, and as well as demand from local fatteners there was some outside interest. Quite a number of breeding sows were offered, but demand was generally limited. The best of the entry reached $lOO. Values:— Small weaners, $11.50 to $l4. Good weaners, $l5 to $18.50. Slips and small stores, $l9 to $25. Good stores. $27 to 135, with odd sales to $4O.
