New materials for ceilings
The range of ceiling products has widened considerably in recent years and offers many materials for new ceilings or replacement. The materials may fall into the general area such as Plasterglass or Gibraltar board, which, with a suitable surface treatment, are applicable in virtually any room in a house. Both are within the capability of a competent handyman, although professional service is available through the Canterbury Building Centre.
Add to either of those ceiling types such specialised treatments as Aptex, Stippling, Whisper or Coralcote, normally tradesmen applications, or cornice mouldings and you have a new-look ceiling treatment with a variety of intriguing patterns. Wallpapering in any of its forms will also add to the two basic ceiling products. The Artex finish, a product used widely overseas but relatively new in New Zealand, is 'applied by specially-trained applicators and is available in an interesting range of designs, each of ' which may be softened or strengthened to meet the needs of the home owner. Whisper, a Revertex product, and Coralcote are sp r a y-applied products which give a- soft-looking sound-absorbent finish in white, off-white or sparkle. They are widely used in living and bedroom areas. The Pinex ceiling panel system is also at its best in living areas and bedrooms, and with a little technical advice and the handy instruction leaflet supplied may be used by the home handyman in new work or home improvement. The new Michelangelo range offers a beautiful choice of patterns and a greater surface coverage per panel. In service areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, showers or laundries the Seratone system comes into its own, giving a high-gloss, smooth surface readily cleaned by a wipe with a damp cloth. In these areas, where steam or fat-bearing in air can be a problem, an easilycleaned ceiling is essential.
