Price rises lower
Single-figure inflation has returned to the food group of the consumer price index for the first time in more than three years. Figures released by the Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris) show that between August, 1977, and last month the average level of food prices rose 9.1 per cent — the lowest increase in al 12-month period since the 7.7 per cent between April, 1974. and April, 1975. The last time a single-fig-ure inflation rate was achieved was in May, 1975, when food prices were up 9.8 per cent on the previous May. I'
Mr Harris said that food! prices rose 0.5 per cent be-j tween July and August ofj this year, compared with 0.7 j per cent between June and! July, and 1.6 per cent between May and June. The monthly increase was the lowest since the rise between February and March, I which was also 0.5 per cent. Of the monthly increase, 0.8 per cent came from the meat, fish, and poultry subgroup, and 0.1 per cent from the other-foods subgroup. These increases were offset by a decrease in the fruit and vegetables subgroup of 10.4 per cent.
