N.Z students lose fencing
NZPA Sydney Australian Universities survived a desperate come-back from New Zealand Universities to win the Whltmont Cup In the fencing international at the University of New South Wales. Australia won the match, 3-1, but had to fight hard. They led the divisions, 2-0, after a top showing from the Australian student, Yeow Tan, aged 22, had highlighted comfortable victories in the men's and women’s foil, 11-5 and 97, but then were walloped, 124, in the epee.
The Kiwis’ form reversal was mainly due to a scintillating performance by their captain, Peter Osvath. Osvath won each of his four bouts in sensational style and conceded only nine hits. With the score on 2-1 to tbu Australians the stage was set for an exciting final. For the Kiwi! to win the eup they had to take tbe sabra comfortably and then have more over-all hits thafi their opponents.
