$1.3M arson by drug addict
PA Palmerston North A confessed drug addict, convicted of deliberate fire damage of $1,300,000 to Palmerston North property yesterday got 14 jail sentences totalling 601 years, of which he is liable to serve six years.
The sentence was imposed by Mr Justice Quilliam in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North, on Wayne Gregory Doherty, aged 21.
Doherty was sentenced to six years jail on each of seven charges of arson, four years for aggravated robbery, three years on each of four charges of burglary, two years for wilfully set-
ting fire to a motor vehicle, and six months for escaping from custody. He pleaded guilty to burglary and arson about May 13; burglary and arson on May 25; wilfully setting fire to a utility on May 25; arson on May 25; aggravated robbery on May 25; burglary and arson on May 14; burglary and arson on April 19; arson on May 15, 1977; and arson on or about May 14, 1977.
Doherty was to have stood trial yesterday on the first of the charges but he changed his plea and admitted all offences with which he was charged.
